Scrambled Aches

“Dehydrated Boulders”

Sorry for not updating, even though I had plenty of time. Spring cleaning was brutal. Anyways, sit back and enjoy our latest Wile E. Coyote cartoon post.

While chasing the Roadrunner for the umpteenth time, (and falling off a cliff) the coyote uses a fake leg that he aims to trip the bird with. The bird runs by so fast it twists, and when the coyote sets it down, he twists. Continuing on with his clever contraptions that he builds; he makes one with a sail, roller skates, and a fan. He can’t steer it apparently since he goes through a lake and off a cliff.

Now up high, he throws an anvil. The bird stops short and the anvil keeps falling and lands on some telephone wires and back up. (Don’t worry. It does not hurt the coyote, it just severs the cliff he’s on.) He sets up a miniature steamroller and it chases the bird. It takes a detour to avoid the roller, and ends up in a cannon. After it fails to ignite, Wile E. looks inside to see what looks like a train. Figuring its just one of the birds pranks, he keeps looking only to get hit by a cannonball, with the bird on top. As he walks away fuming, the steamroller appears. Before he’s clobbered he lets us know it’s the end.

There they go-go-go

“?”

Wile E. Coyote is preparing a delicious feast: a turkey made of mud. After it cooks, he finds he can not eat it and proceeds to toss it into a mud trash can. Cue object of desire. Lunging with a spear (crashes into road) and using a pop-out gun (comes out too far, thus shooting him) are both nothing new. Then he makes some really cool mace copter! That lands on him.

He deploys a ladder for use as a bridge, but cuts it partly so it will break. When he sees the Roadrunner above him, he grabs the ladder and prepares to climb, only for it to snap in half. Eventually he sets up a trap where various boulders will be emptied onto the bird, but they are packed in too tightly. He pokes them with a stick before he realizes what he’s doing. CRASH!

“Egad!!”

While Wile E is chasing his prey, the bird makes a sharp turn just to confuse the canine. (Remember this trick.) The coyote shoots a gun, but the bird actually outruns the bullet. He holds up a steel plate but the bird runs through it. (I think he took the coyote’s body too.) Wile E tries a bat man’s (not Batman) outfit and surprisingly, it works. If he had only looked where he was going…

He makes use of his artistic side and paints a “bridge out” scene. The tunnel gag goes in reverse now, with the bird running through it and the coyote running off it. As a last resort, Wile E rides a jet engine and nearly catches his prize. It pulls the same sharp turn trick though and the coyote falls off a cliff. As he falls he asks that the cartoon end before we see his impact I suppose that’s fair.

Acme Grease

Ahh, lunchtime. Today the coyote is stewing up a delicious can. Too bad he can’t bring himself to actually eat it. Especially when there is better game to hunt. Turning himself into an arrow works until he launches himself into a cactus and off a cliff. He sets up a slingshot attached to a red fuzzy cactus (?) but it does not launch until he does not want it to. He tries firing a cannon, but it shoots him back into a cliff wall before shooting himself in the head.

A wrecking ball just makes the tree it’s attached to fall on him, and when he greases the road, the Roadrunner just mocks him by skating. He thinks tarring and feathering would work, but did you know roadrunners are already feathered? Finally, he buries some dynamite but the bird causes him to run over it just as it detonates. Frustrated, he quits his cartoon job, and and pulls out the “That’s all, folks!” card.

Ready, Set, Zoom!

“Detour thru tunnel”

One morning, the coyote awakes for a fresh day of Roadrunner chasing. Today’s tricks include painting a road with glue. (Look, he’s on it, but then there’s a circle around him. Did it just evaporate?) He gets hit by a truck. He tries again with the glue and a dynamite stick, but the bird just runs through it, splashing the glue on him and the TNT. BOOM!

He successfully gets the bird into a log perched off a cliff, but the bird just jumps out through a knothole. The coyote falls. He tries to drop a weight that does not fall until he’s under it and when he tries a TNT lasso, the bird takes an alternate route, and the coyote blows up. He also makes a creative device complete with wagon and boat motor.  He goes careening off a cliff, and quickly unties himself only for the machine make it to the other side, anyway. He also puts on a female roadrunner suit, and gets chased by every coyote in the desert.

Hyde and Hare

“You…are a mental case.”

During a particular nice day at the park, Bugs observes old people feeding the pigeons. He realizes that he guy who feeds him carrots should be here. Sure enough, there he is. Since they go through this routine every day, Bugs suggests he just become the man’s pet. The man agrees, but as you could probably tell by the title, he’s Dr. Jekyll!

Once home, he goes to get Bugs another carrot, but as he passes by his infamous formula, he gives in to temptation and drinks it. While making himself at home, Bugs finds the monster and tries to get the doc’s attention. He never catches on, despite the doctor and the monster switching places continually. He gives the doctor weapons and drags him into hiding places only for the same result.

Vowing to throw the formula away, the doc finds it gone. Bugs is insulted about being accused of drinking it, and leaves. However, as he gets back to the park, the potion takes effect…

“Hmm…taxadoimy.”

At a department store, there’s a smaller store that is having a sale on sporting goods. As a nice touch, they also have a rabbit hopping around. The bad news is that the sale is over and Bugs is going to be…stuffed! The manager (a caricature of an old radio person, the Great Gildersleeve) is yellow and has an annoying laugh. When Bugs realizes what’s to become of him, a chase starts.

Bugs dresses in drag and yellow guy becomes a pervert. Soon after he learns it’s a ruse, and they begin the chase again. Each time they run into a clothing section, they come out wearing the wares. Soon, Bugs has been cornered on the roof of the building (this reveals Bugs’ eye color to be blue) and running out of tricks, tells about a story he was reading.

There was a situation like this, but behind the big character was a “frankinsense” monster. Bugs leaps behind him and makes a face. This scares the manager, and he leaps off the building. Bugs makes the face to himself and is so scared he jumps too.

Finally: I wonder why Porky does the ending. I think that’s the only time he did that for a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

“I ain’t an ape, I’m a rabbit”

Sorry for lack of update. Went to Disneyland. (What? Looney Tunes fanboys can enjoy it too.)

Back in full swing now. (Pun intended.) We see Bugs in a barrel boat. How did he get here? Who knows, who cares, enjoy the cartoon already, you moron. The current is carrying him to the island of Bingzi Bangza which is home to ferocious apes. However, they seem to be good parents. One couple has no children to the dismay of the mother. (This being her and her husband’s first appearance.)

The father wants no kids, so she heads out to sob. But while she is crying, she finds Bugs. She adopts him (he only agrees to make her stop crying) and takes him home to meet his father. Deciding to do the “little” one in. He takes him out for a walk, where Bugs almost immediately catches on. A lovely chase scene (with Raymond Scott’s “Dinner music for a pack of hungry cannibals” is playing) climaxes with Bugs trapped against a cliff. He allows Gruesome to pound him but the big brute can’t. He’s too worn out from chasing him.

Broomstick Bunny

“Magic mirror on the wall, who is the ugliest one of all?”

Halloween night and our lovely Witch Hazel is preparing a brew. (I’ve always wondered why witches always do that. Is there nothing else to do on a Friday night?) One thing she prides herself on is being ugly, so it is a great stroke of luck that she has a genie’s head in a mirror who can tell who is the ugliest.

Enter Bugs who is trick or treating as a witch. When he comes to her door, she is aghast to find that “she” is uglier than her. She plans to make the witch pretty by drinking a special tea. Bugs takes off his mask and she realizes that not only is he a rabbit, but a rabbit’s clavicle is the final ingredient for her brew. The chase commences and she catches her prize.

She’s about to do him in when, Bugs gives the Bambi eyes. Reminding her of her late tarantula, she bursts into tears. Bugs gives her a cup of tea to calm down, and poof! She turns into June foray. (Or a caricature, anyhow) She runs to her mirror, with the faint hope that she might still be the ugliest. Instead of answering her however, the genie chases after the now sexy witch.

The Big Snooze

“I get the worst of it from that wabbit in every one of these cartoons!”

Judging by the title, you’d think this is one boring cartoon. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is a Bob Clampett cartoon after all! Sadly it is the last one he directed before he left the studio to do his own things.

As usual, Elmer is chasing Bugs. After falling for a log gag that Bugs used in a earlier cartoon (one of the censored eleven) Elmer gets fed up. This is the last straw and he is calling it quits. Bugs tries to get him to reconsider, but Elmer has made up his mind. Deciding to just relax and fish, Elmer falls asleep. This is Bugs’s chance!

He takes some sleeping pills and proceeds have a dream of himself to invade Elmer’s dream. After tormenting him a bit, he dresses Fudd up like a girl. This attracts some wolves who can’t wait to get their paws on him. Bugs helps him escape but in doing so, leads Fudd off a cliff. He falls out of the dream and back into his body. Glad to rid of the nightmare he goes back to chasing Bugs for all eternity. With such a great cartoon as this, it makes one wonder what Bob could have created if he stayed with the WB.
